The Braves of San Carlos High School opened the 2007-2008 baseball season with a five game winning streak, and the schools first ever baseball tournament championship. Head Coach Terry Antonio and his team captured the 4th Annual Salt River Baseball Classic Championship on March 1st.
The Braves began tournament play on Friday with a 6 to 0 win over St. Pauls. Pitcher Virgil Long dominated on the mound in the shut-out win. Later that day San Carlos defeated Monument Valley by a score of 2 to 0. Once again the Braves’ defense didn’t allow a run behind a wonderful pitching performance by Patrick Kitcheyan.
After not allowing a run during the first day of the tournament, the Braves found a test in Tonopah Valley on Saturday. After falling behind 4 to 0 the Braves put up three runs in the third, including a two run home-run by A.J. Henry. San Carlos added another run in the fourth to tie the game, but fell behind again after Tonopah scored in the top of the seventh. Not wanting to spoil a win-streak, the Braves scored both the tying and winning runs in their final at bat to complete the comeback win. Brandon Barton was the winning pitcher in that game.
With the exciting win, San Carlos advanced to a semi-final game against Monument Valley. The Braves quickly jumped out to an 11 to 0 lead after three innings, and would never look back, winning 11 to 5. Virgil Long improved to 2-0 with yet another quality pitching performance. The win also advanced San Carlos to the championship game against St. Gregory.
After falling behind in the first inning, the Braves tied the game at 1 in the third, but again trailed after allowing the go-ahead run in the fifth. As was the case earlier in the tournament, San Carlos battled back to score three huge runs in the final inning to win the game, and tournament championship 4 to 2.
