 Gibson Mine Project Open House

By Ted Lake teddlake@yahoo.com      An open house is being held tomorrow evening, Thursday August 28, for persons interested in knowing more about the next phase of  reclamation work planned at the 220 acre site of the former Gibson copper mine.   The event is being held at the Bullion Plaza Museum in Miami from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. and is hosted by the Franciscan Friars of California who are the owners of the site.  Last year, the Friars completed reclamation work on the Pinto Creek drainage portion of the property at a cost of some two million dollars which included the removal of over 100,000 tons of mine-related materials. This next phase of reclamation is expected to cost more than $250,000. The work will focus on the Mineral Creek drainage, the reclamation of the historical mining facilities and the construction of an innovative water treatment system to improve the quality of runoff. Elevation of the property located seven miles southwest of Miami is more than 4,500 feet.  The Friars have been awarded a grant of $140,000 from the Arizona Department of Environmental Quality to pay for part of the project.  Construction of the water treatment system is expected to begin around the middle of next month.   It was in the early 1900’s when operations of the historic Gibson mine first began and continued sporadically until 1992.
