Mayor of Globe Selected by League of Arizona Cities
August 27, 2008
Copper Country News learned Globe Mayor Fernando Shipley was chosen to serve on the executive committee of the League of Arizona Cities and Towns.
The League was established in 1937 with the mission of “home rule and local determnation.” The intention was to give cities and towns a formidible voice in dealing with the Arizona legislature. In 1942 the League sponsored a ballot initiative that passed securing a 10 percent share of state sales tax for cities and towns. Later, an even larger share was passed.
Former Globe Mayor Stan Gibson approached Mayor Shipley and encouraged him to apply for the open seat. Mayor Gibson felt it was very important for Globe to be represented on that committee.
Seventeen candidates from across Arizona were interviewed, mostly mayors. They selected Fernando Shipley.
Mayor Shipley also shared with Copper Country News that the city’s candidate for city attorney, K. Kane Graves, has accepted the position and will begin in about a month.
One of the visions in the works, is a regional property maintenance ordinance. Globe would work with neighboring cities and towns to adopt an uniform ordinance forcing property owners to repair and remodel buildings that are causing a risk to the public, to neighboring property, and becoming an eyesore.
If in the event of a lawsuit by a negligent property owner to any of the partnering towns, resources would be shared to defend the municipality. The war on blithe is taking a step up. No commitments have been made to make the vision a reality, but talks have began, and feedback has been positive.
