The Human Race - Worlds Largest Running Event

On Sunday August 31, 2008, Nike is sponsoring the world’s largest running event.  The 10k race will be making a statement like no other by providing an event open to anyone, anywhere.  Nike itself is hosting race revues in 25 cities around the world.  And even though our area is not on that list, you can participate on any road making your own race-day course.  This event is allowing a global connection for every participant.  With the Olympics so recently in our consciousness, it’s exciting to think we can unite athletically with the world right in our own home town. The Human Race is open to everyone of every ability.  It’s a perfect time to join other people with similar interests in physical activity and health.  Even if you’ve never run or walked a 10k (6 miles) you could use this occasion to spark a commitment to exercise.  It’s fall, still hot, but school has started and it’s a new season.  Make the race a family affair.  Pick a distance to walk and go for it. Walking for fitness is one of the best of all physical activities.  It’s appropriate for every age group, gender, fitness level, and location.  Walking requires no special equipment other than a decent pair of shoes and socks.  Appropriate clothing is what you have in your dresser.  The benefits of walking are numerous and well documented.  Weight management … blood pressure control … “good” cholesterol boost … reducing the risk of heart attack and heart disease … stroke … breast cancer … type 2 diabetes … and hip fractures.  Plus walking can help prevent depression, colon cancer, constipation, osteoporosis, and impotence … lengthen lifespan … lower stress levels … relieve arthritis and back pain … strengthen muscles, bones, and joints … improve sleep … and elevate overall mood and sense of well-being. John and I will be running/walking on race day.  Because John is thoroughly enthusiastic about all our endeavors and challenges, we’ll be using a Nike+ SportBand to track our miles during the race.  He’ll download our miles on nikeplus.com to have our results officially counted as part of the race.  This process however is not necessary to participate in The Human Race so have fun your way.  As Nike promotes: Just Do It
