GLOBE — Andy Hall, a member of the historic 1869 Powell Expedition mapping and exploring the Colorado River, a shot gun messenger for Wells Fargo, and one time constable of Florence currently lies in an unmarked grave in the Old Globe Cemetery. As part of 2019 Old Dominion Days and the 150th Anniversary of the Powell Expedition, Andy Hall’s family and friends are conducting a dedication ceremony for the Andrew “Andy” Hall Memorial Marker, slated for installation this August in section 4 of the Old Globe Cemetery. The dedication ceremony will take place at 10 am on Sept. 16 at the memorial marker. All are welcome and encouraged to attend this dedication ceremony.

Becky Stephens, third great niece of Andy Hall states, “Our family is excited and honored to remember our Uncle Andy on this very special day in Globe. Recognizing Andy’s final resting place means a great deal to us. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to the state of Arizona, the city of Globe, and all the Grand Canyon enthusiasts for keeping Andy’s memory alive over these past years.”

On Aug. 20, 1882, Andy Hall became the first Wells Fargo messenger killed in the line of duty while guarding an express box containing a $5,000 payroll for the Mack Morris Mine. The incident occurred just outside of Globe.

The town was in an uproar as the local posse brought Hall’s bullet riddled body into town that fateful night. The women of the Methodist Church lovingly prepared his body for burial and the next day the newly installed Methodist Church bell rang as the funeral procession climbed the hill to the Old Globe Cemetery.

Three days later, the townspeople of Globe lynched Lafayette Grime and Curtis Hawley for the murder of Andy Hall.
