Armida Guereña Bittner

What a beautiful transition for a much-beloved woman! Armida Guereña Bittner was surrounded by family as she passed early Easter morning. As we look back on Armida’s life, we can see the solid foundation for a life well-lived and well-loved.
Born into a Mexican-American family, Armida’s life began with strong cultural, family and work ethics.
Armida started her married life with Edwin Ross Bittner, both in their teens. She and Ross had 3 children – David, Kimberly and Lisa. Always the kindhearted, compassionate woman, Armida was determined to improve her life and her family’s future.
With her husband’s support, Armida earned her GED, attended night classes at Eastern Arizona College and earned her Associate of Arts degree, and attended ASU for her Bachelor’s degree and NAU for her Master’s degree. This was all accomplished while employed full-time and raising 3 children.
Armida was employed by Globe Unified School District as a classroom teacher and Title 1 teacher. She excelled in the classroom with her students and colleagues because of her life’s experiences and her openness. Her strong commitment to education remains her most lasting legacy.
She was voted as Gila County Superintendent of Schools and remained in that position for 16 years. Her accomplishments for the citizens of Gila County included GED classes, Safe Schools Officers and the Gila Literacy Program, along with many professional recognitions. With the many accomplishments and recognitions earned and deserved by Armida, the true value of her life was her understanding of the strengths and needs of her family and friends. She truly gave of herself to all who crossed her path.
Our family has always known the beauty of Armida Guereña Bittner – Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Sister, Sister-in-law, Auntie, Cousin and Friend – and the impact she has made on others’ lives. We are all blessed to have her in our lives.
