Get the shot and not the flu

SAN CARLOS — Getting a free flu shot is a great idea according to Sally Aday of the Health Education Program at the San Carlos Apache Healthcare Corporation.

In January community members can get shots at special flu clinics every Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Public Health Building at 102 Medicine Way Road Peridot, AZ.

To get to the right building, follow the signs and balloons.

People can also get free shots from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday at the same location.

The hospital reports a “High Number of flu cases on the San Carlos Apache Reservation.”

The high incidence of flu has not reached the level of an outbreak or epidemic according to hospital authorities, but the number of cases is much higher than normal for this time of year.

Community members can likely skip one or two of the most miserable weeks of their lives simply by getting a flu shot.

People who are six months and older can benefit from the shot, but it is especially important for the very young, seniors and those with a chronic disease such as diabetes.

The health education program is getting the word out by flyers and radio programs to help people avoid the flu.

They also recommend that you stay home from work or school when you are sick to keep from spreading the disease.
