Parents of pre-schoolers: did you know the single most significant factor influencing a child’s early educational success is having books in your home, and being read to at home before starting school? Karen Aguero’s job is to get free books into preschoolers’ homes – a fresh new storybook that arrives in the mail each month.
“Growing up my favorite books were ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar,’ ‘The Rainbow Fish,’ and ‘Charlotte’s Web.’ I still enjoy reading, although lately it’s been college textbooks rather than reading for pleasure – and I love reading to my two boys, ages four and six. I took a children’s literature class in college and became even more enthusiastic to read to them. Its so rewarding to see how engaged kids are when you’re sharing a favorite story with them and reading aloud – I even read to my son’s preschool class as a parent volunteer.”
Karen started work this month with Gila County’s Library District, and is proving to be an energetic ambassador for kids’ literacy. Watch for her signup table at AYSO soccer games on Saturday mornings this month, and at community events such as Octoberfest and Apache Jii Day. Organizations are welcome to invite her as a guest speaker or presenter – its her job to travel around our communities to set up book table at events. Parents may also enroll pre-schoolers with a phone call to 928-812-3975, or email [email protected]
Raising two preschoolers is just one item on Karen’s resume that prepared her for this new job promoting early literacy; she became well acquainted with local moms from three years working for Gila County’s WIC program. Her new job allows more flexibility for her to balance family time and completion of a college degree in nursing.
“The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is a great program, both my kids have a full collection of books thanks to the program – and thanks to Gila County’s Library district for hiring coordinators like me in Globe, Payson, and also to get books into San Carlos Apache homes.
