Globe Unified School District’s students and families gathered at Harbison Field on Tuesday, July 24 for Tiger Pride and Meet the Teacher Night.
This event showcased points of pride for GUSD as well as allowing families one night to meet teachers and staff throughout the district.
This event unified the entire district and served as a means to bolster familial involvement in education, showcase student activities, and bolster community camaraderie.
“I was very proud of our GUSD staff for facilitating ‘Tiger Pride,’” GUSD Superintendent, Jerry Jennex, said. “It’s a wonderful thing when people are willing to try something new. The fellowship between GUSD staff, students, and community exemplified our district vision of ‘Capturing Hearts, Empowering Minds.’”
Families enjoyed free food and drink, sponsored by Tolin Mechanical, and students were given a free backpack with school supplies courtesy of the Salvation Army. The Globe FFA Alumni and students volunteered to man the grill, food and drink stations.
Copper Rim Elementary School, High Desert Middle School and Globe High School also all participated in open campus days so that interested students could find their classrooms prior to the first day of school.
Changes this year at Globe Unified School District
Globe Unified School District is working to make positive changes for students and families. The positive changes are part of a focus on continuous improvement surrounding academic achievement. The following is a brief overview of a few of the changes at GUSD:
GUSD is on a trimester schedule. Historically, GUSD has been structured in terms of quarters and semesters. Advantages of a trimester schedule are increased instructional time, additional course offerings, and academic interventions that are embedded in the schedule.
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) classes have been added in grades 3, 4 and 5 at Copper Rim Elementary School. Students in the STEM classes will learn traditional subject matter with a focus on STEM. In addition, they will be given the opportunity to learn robotics, computer coding and mining and agricultural processes.
Additional Elective Courses at High Desert Middle School including journalism, drama, and Mandarin Chinese.
Continuation of the Globe High School – Gila Community College Academy which allows students to take college courses for free on GHS campus. Many students will graduate with an Associate’s Degree by the time they graduate from GHS.
Facility Changes throughout the District:
HDMS has undergone a flooring project to improve student safety.
HDMS fields have been seeded and the outdoor area is updated.
Copper Rim has a new road which will assist in safe traffic flow.
GHS gymnasium flooring is in the process of being replaced due to a water leak.
