On Saturday, Nov. 10, Resolution Copper successfully demolished the remaining smelter stack that was a remnant of the historical copper heritage of Superior. At approximately 8:36 a.m. demolition experts brought the old Magma Copper smelter chimney down in a controlled explosion to the delight and sadness of people lining Main Street in downtown Superior. According to a press release from Resolution Copper, the stack had to come down due to safety concerns and contamination of the stack and the site. “Resolution Copper’s number one priority is ensuring the health and safety of our employees and the community and finalizing this latest phase of the 15-year reclamation effort is a vital step in fulfilling our commitment to health, safety and environmental stewardship.” To read the entire press release, and for more photos, see this week’s edition of the Silver Belt.
