Letter to Superintendent

I don’t usually involve myself in the business of the schools in the area especially since I no longer have anyone close to me going to either Globe or Miami High Schools; however, I feel compelled to at this time. I am aware of the rivalry between the two schools and I know that the “G” in Globe and the “M” in Miami have always been desecrated in some way before the game between the two teams. This seems to be accepted by both communities, which I have accepted as a prank by young people from the opposing teams. This year; however, I cannot accept the desecration of the American Flag that was painted green on the Globe “G”. I am a widow of a service member that spent 24 years of his life protecting the flag and the freedom of this country and seeing the meaning of the flag disregarded by anyone makes my heart sick.

I have thought about this situation for several days and have come to the conclusion that perhaps Globe and Miami High Schools should not be playing football in the future if the young people at both schools cannot realize the meaning and the importance of our American Flag. Former students of both schools have given many years of their lives and made significant sacrifices, yes, and some have made the ultimate sacrifice, to protect our freedom. The American Flag is a symbol of that freedom and should NEVER, NEVER be desecrated or disrespected in any manner for any reason.

Thank you for listening. Anne Powers
