National Night Out planned

This year’s National Night Out event is just around the corner, on the evening of August 2 at the historic Train Depot downtown from 4 p.m. ti ll 8 p.m. Again, it will be in a Rock the Block format with a focus on the importance of family literacy. National Night Out is hosted every year on the first Tuesday of August to promote police-community partnerships, prevention efforts, public safety and neighborhood unity. This year the event will follow a Star Wars  theme, with exhibitors, food vendors and host agencies playing the part of their favorite character from the Star Wars universe.

Always a fun event for kids, and a kick-off to the start of the school year, National Night Out – Rock the Block invites students and families to visit a variety of information booths to receive free school supplies, books, resource information and fun surprises. As they visit booths, they will have their Quest Card punched by the booths they visited. Filled Quest Cards can then be turned in for free treats from food vendors and used for prize drawings at the close of the evening.

We are seeking the following partners to dress the part, channel the Force and help make this a memorable event for our youth:

> Local Schools: Welcome your new students with tables that double as a fund raiser for your class or club. Schools may register for multiple tables to accommodate clubs, sports, etc. Appearances by school mascots and your spirit squads will make this a great event!

> Community Resource Providers: This will be a great opportunity to meet with the community and tell them about your wonderful services. We are asking that each resource provider bring school supplies for about 200 students (K – 12).

> Local Retail: While retail sales at the event are not allowed except for licensed food vendors, this will be a great opportunity to reach out to students and their families about your business and provide incentives (coupons, special promotions, etc.) to create new customers. Additionally, we are asking that each business bring school supplies for about 200 students (K – HS).

> Food/refreshment (non-alcoholic) vendors: We are asking for licensed mobile food vendors to provide dining options for attendees (hopefully with a Star Wars flavor!) Additionally, we are asking that each food vendor provide a free menu item for each completed Quest Card turned in and that the vendors hold the cards to be turned in for the prize raffles at the end of the event.

> Business and Civic Leaders: We are always appreciative of donations to help make the event the best it can be. Event raffle prizes are always in demand and the donor will be acknowledged at the raffle unless they wish to remain anonymous.

In addition to the Quest Card drawings, there will be a prize for best table decorated in our Star Wars theme and best costume! More information to follow.
