GLOBE — While the kids have been enjoying it for some time, the formal grand opening ceremony for the playground at Old Dominion Historic Mine Park is set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 3.
The playground, with its mining theme, will be the backdrop as the park committee recognizes the partners and supporters who have made this piece of the puzzle that is a mining park complete. The park is handicapped-accessible, allowing children of all levels, a chance to enjoy the amenities.
The public is invited to attend and join in the ribbon-cutting ceremony planned after a short program recognizing sponsors and partners. Bring your kids and have them make the dash to the park after the ribbon cutting.
The Old Dominion Historic Mine Park has been nearly 2 decades in the making as volunteers serving on a subcommittee under the Gila County Historical Society worked on trails, historical signage, educational signs, an equipment boneyard and this playground. The park has proven to be a favorite of not only the locals, but its mining information has been a tourist draw as well.
The work at the park has been a partnership of local companies as well as individuals who have turned out in force at several Volunteer Days to do everything from trail building and maintenance, to spreading wood chips and installing signs. Volunteers are invited to wear their volunteer t-shirt and attend the grand opening on Feb. 3.
The playground is a result of partnerships between the park committee, Gila County Historical Society, BHP Billiton, the City of Globe, Gila County Board of Supervisors, Freeport Foundation, Globe-Miami United Fund, Resolution Copper, Ajax, Dalmolin Excavating, and a host of other businesses, groups and individuals who have donated time, money and elbow grease to make this playground a reality.
