Robert Chacon Oviedo

Robert Chacon Oviedo, also known by family and friends as “Mangas” and “Cachi.” Robert was born on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 1938. The son of Gabriel “Pinky” Oviedo and Genoveva Oviedo in Miami, Ariz.

He peacefully entered eternal rest at St Luke’s Hospital on Tuesday, Aug. 28, 2018. Robert enjoyed all things outdoors which included camping, fishing, hiking and traveling through all the western portion of the United States and some mid states. His favorite Arizona camp sites were the Sierra Anchas and the Pinto Valley swimming hole.

He enjoyed the rich history of our country’s national forests and monuments.

He was an avid reader of Westerns and especially fond of the Don Juan Carlos series. He was a longtime member of The National Geographic Magazine, The Arizona Highways, True West and his brother purchased his subscriptions to Reader’s Digest.

Robert worked from the age of 13. His first job was a “pin setter” at the original Miami bowling alley. Still in his young teens, he traveled to California and worked for the Catalina Swim Suit Company. This was a seasonal position therefore, he would return home to Miami and worked in construction. In his early 20s, he was hired by Miami ICCCO. After 35 years of service he retired from the mine.

Love struck by Cupid’s arrow he met and fell in love with his true love Lacey L. Chapman. They met in January, he proposed in March and they got married on May 8, 1961 in Tucson, Ariz. Their eldest daughter, Justine Oviedo was born on March 15, 1962. Five years later their second daughter Ruth Oviedo was born on Oct. 30, 1967.

He was preceded in death by his mother Genoveva, his brother Genaro “Gene” and his father Gabriel “Pinky.” Surviving family members include his wife Lacey, his two daughters Justine and Ruth, grandson Matthew Mendoza (wife Dana Mendoza), two great-grandsons, Jacob and Brayden, great-granddaughter Brooklyn, two sisters Jenny Dunston and Stella Burgett, also stepmother Maria Oviedo and six nieces and nephews.

Robert lived his life simply and was a member of Our Lady of Blessed Sacrament Church. His final request was “no services!”
