Sign up for the Apache Basket weaving class

The San Carlos Apache Culture Center Museum will host an Apache Basket Weaving Class on Aug. 19 to 22.

The classes will be held at the Peridot Culture Center Museum and will begin each day at 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. There will be a $10 fee for the class and participants must commit to attend the class every day.

The instructor for the class is Betty Goode from the Seven Mile Wash District. Goode said she learned to weave from the late Luella Logan and her late sister Marilyn Logan. She continued and said she really wanted to learn weaving so she got to know other weavers who would give guidance to her.

Participants are to have their own materials, which include: buckskin leather, pruning shears, scissors and an awl.

The first day of class will be to get the sticks/twigs and the second day is on peeling and splitting the sticks.

The third day is to start the basket, and the final day is to finish the basket. Goode said participants should be able to finish a basket and take it home with them.

The class is limited to the first ten people, call the Museum at 928-475-2894, or come to the museum to sign up for the class.
