Tonto National Monument Participates in Audubon’s 120th Annual Christmas Bird Count Roosevelt

Tonto National Monument invites the public to assist with the collection of bird data for the National Audubon Society’s 120th Annual Christmas Bird Count on Saturday, Dec. 21.

The bird count will be conducted during Monument hours from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Participants can register for the count at the Visitor Center where data recording materials, identifications guides, and binoculars are available for use during the event.

All levels of birding are encouraged to participate in this citizen science experience. This event is free and open to the public. Guided birding excursions will be available for visitors at the times and locations below.

Please meet at the Tonto National Monument Visitor Center to register for a group and receive data recording materials prior to the listed time.

9 a.m. - Cactus Patch Trail 10 a.m. - Riparian Area* 11 a.m. - Windy Hill Campground 2 p.m. - Cactus Patch Trail 3 p.m. - Riparian Area*

*The trail to the riparian area is an unpaved dirt trail with many loose rocks and stone steps

This citizen science project will assist the National Audubon Society in its nationwide survey, and provide Tonto National Monument with an updated species inventory. Christmas bird counts across Arizona range from the Grand Canyon and Sedona, to Lake Pleasant - the Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge - and more than two dozen locations.

Three notable dates for counts that are closest to Globe-Miami include Dec. 26 Superior (which includes Boyce Thompson Arboretum, Oak Flat, Queen Creek); Jan. 2 for the count in Payson, and Jan. 4 in Dudleyville.
