Roy D. Hicks (93) passed away at home in Wheatfields on Aug. 12, 2024. Roy was born to Lloyd and Madeline Hicks on June 2, 1931, in Globe, Arizona. He attended Globe Schools and graduated from Globe High School in 1949.

He married his high school sweetheart, Marylin Shreeve, in 1950. Roy is preceded in death by his wife and lifelong love, Marylin, his parents and sister Joann. He is survived by his daughter Karen, sons Ken and Melvin (Penny), five grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren along with many nieces and nephews.

Roy was a rancher, spending his entire life on the Hicks Ranch; and when the ranch was sold, he continued to help the new owners until his retirement. He was an excellent welder, mechanic, and windmill specialist. Roy was always willing to help neighboring ranchers and friends with anything they needed. Roy was a past member of the Gila County Hospital Board, the Gila County Fair and Racing Commission, and the Gila County Cattle Growers Association where he was the past president and was instrumental in building of the Burch Sale Yard.

Roy was a proud veteran of the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. Roy’s “one-liners” were always welcome, funny, and expected during a conversation. Roy Hicks will be remembered as the last true pioneer cattleman in Gila County as he continued the legacy of the family ranch that dated back to the late 1800s.

At his request, there will be no services.
